What ticket platforms take: a fee calculator

Platform fees on paid tickets, at the rates for the Netherlands. Your payment provider's fees and VAT come on top; see below.

The calculator shows the fees on paid tickets in the Netherlands, before your payment provider's fees and before VAT. With free tickets, none of these platforms charges a ticket fee. Nothing you type is sent anywhere: the sums happen in your browser.

How each platform charges

Eventbrite

Eventbrite's article on ticketing fees lists the Netherlands under its legacy packages:

  • Essentials: €0.49 per sold ticket for tickets of €10.01 or less, or 2% + €0.49 above that.
  • Professional: €0.99 per sold ticket for tickets of €10.01 or less, or 4% + €0.99 above that.

By default your buyers pay these fees on top of the ticket price. You can choose to absorb them instead. Rates differ per country: in Germany Essentials is 5.5% per sold ticket, and in Ireland the fee is 5.9% + €0.79. Your own rates are in your organisation settings.

Luma

Luma's pricing page has a free plan with a 5% platform fee on paid events, on top of Stripe's fee. Luma Plus has a 0% platform fee and costs $59 a month, billed annually, which is $708 a year. Luma's help centre says it has no option to add the fees on top of the ticket price, so they come out of what you receive.

Whova

Whova's own price comparison gives its fees as 3.0% + $0.99 per paid ticket, and its page on ticketing says this comes on top of Stripe's fee. You can absorb the fee or pass it on. Whova's price for the platform itself is on request, so it is not in the calculator.

Meetup

Meetup charges by subscription. To charge for an event, you need a Standard or Pro plan; Standard starts from $29.99 a month or $174.99 a year. Buyers pay a service fee on top of the ticket price, which Meetup gives as $1.62 on a $10 ticket, and organisers pay a transaction fee to PayPal. Meetup publishes no table of these fees, so it is not in the calculator.

AttendBeacon

The AttendBeacon pricing page works per event, not per ticket:

  • An event where every ticket is free is always free, at any size.
  • Any other event is free up to 1,000 participants.
  • Above that, a one-off licence costs €500 per event, excluding VAT.
  • There is no fee per ticket and no subscription.

Three examples

A meetup: 50 tickets at €10€0€24.50€25€15 + $49.50
A community day: 300 tickets at €25€0€297€375€225 + $297
A conference: 1,500 tickets at €150€500€5,235€11,250€6,750 + $1,485

Below 1,000 participants, AttendBeacon costs nothing, whatever the ticket price. Above it, the licence is the same €500 whether you sell tickets at €20 or €500. The platforms that charge per ticket grow with every sale and with the price. Luma Plus also charges no fee per ticket, for its subscription.

Who pays the fee

That depends on the platform, and it changes what your buyers see:

  • On top of the price. Eventbrite adds its fees to the ticket price by default, so a €25 ticket costs your buyer more at checkout. You can absorb them instead. Whova lets you choose too. Meetup's service fee is always paid by the buyer.
  • Out of your revenue. Luma takes its fee from the ticket price. To receive €25, you price the ticket higher.
  • Neither. AttendBeacon has no fee per ticket, so the price on the event page is what your buyer pays, and you receive it minus your payment provider's fee.

Payment fees come on top

On AttendBeacon, Luma and Whova, buyers pay through a payment provider, which charges its own fees per payment. Two examples for the Netherlands:

  • Stripe: 1.5% + €0.25 for standard cards from the European Economic Area, and €0.29 for iDEAL.
  • Mollie: 1.80% + €0.25 for consumer cards from the European Economic Area, and €0.32 for iDEAL.

Eventbrite collects the payments itself. Its article mentions a payment processing fee "where applicable", but names none for the Netherlands.

What the calculator leaves out

  • Cvent and Bizzabo do not charge per ticket in a way they publish. See the comparisons with Cvent and Bizzabo.
  • Subscriptions. Luma Plus and Meetup cost money every month, whatever you sell.
  • VAT on the fees, and fees on refunds.
